How do you feel about protein powders?
As someone who focuses on eating whole foods as much as possible, I was weary of protein powders for a long time. Most brands contain artificial colors, flavors, and/or heavily processed ingredients and I wasn’t a fan of the majority of powders because they contain whey. If I was going to make a post-workout drink, I’d usually opt to add a handful of nuts or seeds to a green smoothie instead of consuming a protein powder.
However, I’ve been getting back into regular strength training and with my work schedule, it hasn’t been possible to make a smoothie on-the-go. So, I decided to go in search of some different protein-rich snacks and test out one of the protein powders that had been highly recommended to me throughout the years: Sunwarrior.
Sunwarrior is a small, growing health food company that makes organic, non-GMO, raw, vegan supplements, while being committed to preserving the planet. Their supplements are also hypoallergenic, gluten-free, soy-free, and of course dairy-free. I got the opportunity to try out their Starter Pack, which contained 3 of their protein powders (in both chocolate and vanilla) as well as a few other supplements.
I was excited to test out the proteins and it was interesting because I felt like I was going back to my vegan roots. Since their supplements are plant-based, they don’t contain any animal products. Instead, the protein sources come from peas, hemp, chia seeds, quinoa, brown rice, amaranth, and/or other grains. I don’t typically consume grains nowadays, but I also believe in varying my diet and try to strike a balance by including vegetarian/vegan meals for sustainability reasons. That being said, if you are strict about not consuming grains, this might not be the protein supplement for you.
There were a few things I considered when testing out the supplements:
1. Ingredients
2. Protein Content
3. Taste
4. Ease of Use
After trying the five protein powders, I decided these were my top two picks:
Product: Classic Plus Organic- Vanilla Flavor
- Ingredients: Organic Pea, Organic Brown Rice, Organic Quinoa, Organic Chia Seed, Organic Amaranth, Organic Vanilla Flavor, Ancient Sea Salt, Organic Guar Fiber, Organic Stevia.
- Protein Content: 22 g
- Taste and Ease of Use: I mixed this one with 10 ounces of unsweetened almond milk and 3 ice cubes. I’m usually not a fan of vanilla protein powders in general as I’ve found they tend to have a strange aftertaste. This one was just a tad chalky, but overall I was pleasantly surprised. It was super simple to mix in a shaker bottle and then I was on my way!
Product: Warrior Blend- Chocolate Flavor
- Ingredients: Protein Blend (Raw Organic Pea Protein, Raw Cranberry Protein, Raw Organic Hemp Seed Protein), Organic Dutch Cacao, Organic Chocolate Extract, Organic Vanilla Extract, Stevia, Natural Cherry Extract, Medium Chain Triglycerides, Ancient Sea Salt, Herbal Tea Extract, Natural Fibers (Fenugreek, Konjac), Natural Citrus Extract.
- Protein Content: 17 g
- Taste and Ease of Use: I mixed this one with 10 ounces of unsweetened almond milk and 3 ice cubes. This one actually tasted pretty good and reminded me of chocolate hemp milk. This was definitely my favorite out of the Sunwarrior powders I tried. It was also easy to mix in a shaker bottle and could be combined with water instead of nut milk on-the-go.
Overall I was really happy with Sunwarrior’s products. The quality and types of ingredients used were the cleanest out of the protein powders I found, the protein content was pretty high per serving, and the taste was decent for a protein powder. Now I’m excited to get to share them with you!
I’m super excited that Sunwarrior is giving one lucky reader the chance to test out the same Starer Pack that I got to enjoy!
