I never thought that I’d call myself a “yoga person,” but over the last couple of years I’ve really fallen in love with it. You might remember me sharing my love for yoga in some of my past posts about celebrating my 1-year yoga anniversary, what I learned from Yogathon 2014, and how I stay active. Awhile back my hot yoga studio added hot pilates classes so it’s been fun to incorporate this into my routine as well.
If you do yoga or use your yoga mat on a regular basis, it’s really important to keep it clean. For hot yoga I like to use a yoga towel in addition to my mat, but it’s still important to give the mat a thorough cleaning after classes.
My preferred way of cleaning my mat is actually hand washing it in the bathtub using a little bit of Dr. Bronner’s soap and a washcloth, then letting the mat air dry outside. However, when I’m doing yoga 4 – 5 days a week, this isn’t always possible so I created this DIY yoga mat spray using some of my favorite essential oils to do the trick!
Tea tree oil and lavender essential oils help to kill any bacteria and keep the mat smelling fresh. Combine these together in a spray bottle with a little water and you’re good to go!
Please note: Many people are sensitive to fragrance and essential oils so I would not recommend spraying this at your yoga studio out of consideration for others who may be chemical/fragrance-sensitive.
- 3 oz fresh water
- 6 drops tea tree oil
- 5 drops lavender essential oil
- Combine ingredients into a spray bottle.
- Shake, spray on yoga mat, wipe down, and let air dry before rolling mat up.
