Wellness Wed: Drink More Water

(In case you missed previous posts, catch up here: Part 1: Energy Management, Part 2: Technology Detox, and Part 3: Practice Fabulous Self-Care)

Okay, I have officially been starting, deleting, and re-starting this post for the past two hours. That usually is a signal of one of three things:

  1. I’m way too tired to be writing.
  2. I have nothing to say.
  3. I have a lot to say.

Let’s hope it’s the last one. 😉

If I had to sum up this past week in a nutshell it’d be this: stay hydrated, eat well, get sleep, and stop being so hard on yourself. Seriously.

I’m planning to expand on that last point more next week, but this week I figured I’d keep it simple and talk to you about hydration and my mission to drink more water. I think all of us know that water is absolutely critical for our bodies, but did you know that staying hydrated can help you to have more energy, decrease sugar cravings, and help prevent bloating?

I’m pretty good about drinking water constantly throughout my day, but I also know that it’s always easier to do if I follow a few tips:

1. Make infused water

For the past few weeks I’ve been filling several mason jars with a variety of ingredients  to let them infuse overnight.

This week I kept it simple and played with strawberries, cucumber, mint, ginger, and lime since that’s what I had on hand, but some of my all-time favorite combinations include:

  • Strawberry, cucumber and mint
  • Strawberry and sliced ginger
  • Cucumber, lime, and basil
  • Watermelon slices and lime
  • Blueberries and orange slices
  • Raspberries and lemon
  • Melon, cucumbers, and cilantro

2. Make it mindless

I tend to easily lose track of what I’m eating or drinking when I’m working. (For the record, this usually works against me, but in this case, I’ve been able to make it work for me.) I always have my Brita pitcher and a glass of water next to me so it’s easy to keep drinking water while I’m at the computer, on the phone, or cooking in my kitchen. I also ordered some reusable straws so it’d be easier to drink from my mason jars and would feel even more “mindless.”

3. Keep water with you at all times

Accessibility is definitely part of the previous tip about making it mindless, but I felt it was important enough that I wanted to call it out separately. I’m usually pretty good about carrying around my nalgene, but since I tend to drink more water when I have a straw, I recently bought a set of these insulated cups (BPA-free!) so I could carry them with me on-the-go and not worry about dropping a glass jar. If you don’t already have a traveling water bottle, I would encourage you to get one. Note: If you go with a plastic version, make sure it’s BPA-free, or you can also try a glass water bottle or stainless steel one.
