When I was growing up, I used to always tease my mom for wearing the same outfit all the time: black leggings with a black sweater. Now as an adult, I wish I could go back in time and tell my younger self to just shut it and give it twenty years because I’ll be wearing this same outfit too.
I’ve noticed that my closet has become much simpler as of late and everything can fall into one of three categories: black tops, white sweaters, and grey hoodies.
In an effort to add a bit more color to my wardrobe, I went shopping over the weekend. Of course, this was really necessitated by the fact that I had ordered some tops online in an attempt to avoid having to “go shopping” in the first place, but they didn’t fit well and had to be returned to the store.
After three long hours and only making it through two stores, it was time to call it quits. And, even after all that work, I have no new clothes to show for it so this week it’s back to… black leggings with a black sweater. I love you, mom.
Maybe you had an exhausting weekend too, are trying to cut back or wean yourself off of coffee, or are just looking for a delicious way to show your adrenals some love… regardless of the reason, I think you’ll enjoy this maca mocha.
Let’s start by talking about some ingredients.
This maca mocha doesn’t have any coffee or caffeine. Instead, it gets its energizing power from maca root, which has been used by the Peruvian population for centuries. Maca powder is one of my favorite supplements because it provides a nice energy boost (without caffeine!) and can help with chronic fatigue and low libido.
Maca also helps support the body’s endocrine system to naturally balance hormones. I really like it in this recipe because it adds a sweet, malty taste without any added sugars! You can find maca powder in most health food stores or online.
The base of this drink comes from cashews and coconut oil for healthy fats. You’ve probably been hearing a lot about the benefits of coconut oil in your diet and one of the reasons is that coconut oil contains Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCTs). MCTs are a great source of energy and can have therapeutic effects on the body.
So, while this drink may be higher in fat than a skinny vanilla latte, it’s also going to give your body lasting energy without taxing your adrenals and the cashews will definitely help curb hunger. (Note: this has recently become my favorite afternoon snack and helps me stay full until dinnertime.)
This maca mocha definitely wouldn’t be a mocha without some chocolate so I used raw cacao powder to add a rich chocolate taste. If you don’t have raw cacao powder, you can also use cocoa powder, but I usually opt for cacao powder because it doesn’t have added sugar and since the cacao beans are processed at low temperatures, this powder is full of antioxidants and minerals (like magnesium and iron) that you would find in the cacao bean.
Lastly, this recipe doesn’t contain sugar so instead, I added a few drops of vanilla stevia along with cinnamon for natural sweetness and to help balance blood sugar.
This maca mocha is a wonderful way to energize your body without caffeine and the healthy fats make it a great afternoon snack to curb hunger!
