Healthy Cookbooks for the Holidays

As a food blogger and total foodie, my life just wouldn’t feel complete without cookbooks. Throughout the years I’ve created quite a collection and there are always new ones that I’m adding to my bookshelf. Here is my list of my current top favorite healthy cookbooks that are perfect for gifting or adding to your own collection.
Wild Fermentation: The Flavor, Nutrition, and Craft of Live-Culture Foods by Sandor Ellix Katz (gluten-free, vegan and paleo options)

Wild Fermentation is what got me hooked on fermenting foods and helped me to start making my own kimchi. Katz walks you through the history of fermentation and helps you understand the basics to creating a variety of fermented foods. Recipes include vegetable and bean ferments as well as breads, grains, wines, beers, dairy, and vinegars, making this a great gift for anyone looking to begin fermenting foods and improve their health.

Fresh and Fermented: 85 Delicious Ways to Make Fermented Carrots, Kraut, and Kimchi Part of Every Meal by Julie O’Brien (gluten-free, vegan and paleo options)

Fresh and Fermented just came out this year and I’m already obsessed with it! This cookbook is filled with creative recipes to help you incorporate fermented foods into every meal (even smoothies)! It was written by the founders of Firefly Kitchens and I’ve been enjoying their fermented products from the local farmers market for years so I know they’re legit. If you think you don’t like sauerkraut, this cookbook just might change your mind.

Anti-Inflammatory Eating Made Easy

Anti-Inflammatory Eating Made Easy: 75 Recipes and Nutrition Plan by Michelle Babb (gluten-free, vegan and paleo options)

I shared a full review of this cookbook a few weeks ago and I’ve only come to love it more since then. Michelle is a registered dietitian with a private practice here in Seattle where she specializes in mind-body nutrition, weight management and inflammatory digestive disorders. I’ve worked with Michelle before and I can tell you that she knows her stuff and makes amazing food so if you’re looking for a great cookbook that will inspire you to eat healthier, be sure to check this one out!

Clean Food, Revised Edition: A Seasonal Guide to Eating Close to the Source by Terry Walters (plant-based/vegan and gluten-free, contains grains)

Clean Food was one of the first cookbooks I bought and it’s gotten many, many uses in my kitchen. Terry Walters’ recipes are beautiful, simple, and delicious and I always trust the ingredients that Terry uses. If you are looking for an all-around fabulous cookbook, especially focused on plant-based/vegan eating, this one is wonderful and would be perfect for any home chef.

Practical Paleo: A Customized Approach to Health and a Whole-Foods Lifestyle by Diane Sanfilippo (paleo, gluten-free, grain-free)

Practical Paleo is a wonderful guide for anyone looking to get started on a paleo diet or needing help with the basics of paleo-style eating. Diane’s recipes are fresh, delicious, and simple and this book also includes helpful meal plans for those needing a bit more structure.

Healthy Cookbooks for the Holidays

Bare Root Sweets by Angela Gallardo (paleo, gluten-free, with vegan options)

Craving something sweet that’s still healthy? Bare Root Sweets is your new best friend. Angela’s cookbook is one of my favorite dessert cookbooks because all of the recipes are ones that I would actually use and cook from— without having to make adaptations! All of her recipes are sugar-free, grain-free, low carb, AND delicious.

Good Fish: Sustainable Seafood Recipes from the Pacific Coast by Becky Selengut (paleo and gluten-free options)

Becky is one of my favorite local Seattle authors. I’ve had the pleasure of working with her before and not only is she hilarious, but she’s an incredibly knowledgable chef. This cookbook teaches you everything you need to know about seafood – from sustainable sourcing, to preparing, to cooking, to pairing with wine. If you live on the Pacific Coast and enjoy seafood, this one is a must-have.

Julie Morris’ cookbook features over 100 recipes with different superfoods including chia seeds, goji berries, cacao, algae, flaxseeds, quinoa, and sea vegetables. This cookbook is a really fun one for someone looking to increase the healthfulness of everyday recipes and add new foods to their diet.

Make it Paleo: Over 200 Grain Free Recipes For Any Occasion by Bill Staley and Hayley Mason (paleo, gluten-free, and grain-free)

For anyone looking to transition to a grain-free lifestyle or if you’re in need of some paleo recipe inspiration, this is one of my favorite cookbooks. Make It Paleo has over 200 recipes so if only have room on your shelf for a few cookbooks I would definitely recommend this one as it covers breakfasts, entrees, salads, dressings, treats, and more. I like that Bill and Hayley make paleo eating simple and appealing.

Healthy Cookbooks For The Holidays

The Inspired by Zucchini eCookbook by Sonnet Lauberth (paleo, gluten-free, grain-free, and plant-based/vegetarian)

When I wrote this cookbook, I had no idea that spiralizing was going to take the world by storm. This cookbook contains a mix of meat and vegan/vegetarian recipes all centered around our favorite vegetable: zucchini. I created this cookbook specifically for folks like you and me – who desire to eat good food, treat our bodies right, respect our food allergies and dietary restrictions, and want to know what to do with this amazingly delicious, nutritious, and low-carb veggie. From juices and smoothies to salads to entrees and pasta, this cookbook will make you love zucchini even more! (note: this cookbook is only available as an ebook and is not currently available as a hard copy)

The Seasonal Comfort Food eCookbook by Sonnet Lauberth (paleo, gluten-free, grain-free, and plant-based/vegetarian)

I had to include this cookbook in this round-up because if you’re looking for healthy comfort food, I honestly still haven’t found a better cookbook on the market than this. I created this cookbook because I love comfort food, but I wanted to find a way to indulge in comfort food that tasted delicious and was still good for my body. This cookbook features over 55 grain-free, gluten-free, and dairy-free comfort food recipes that will forever change the way you think about comfort food! (note: this cookbook is only available as an ebook and is not currently available as a hard copy)
